Construction Methods That Prioritize Structural Integrity

Durability begins with how a crate is built. CLG uses screw shank nails across all crate manufacturing, providing significantly greater holding strength than smooth fasteners. To further reinforce each structure, nails are spaced 4 to 6 inches apart and installed in a “W” pattern along framing members. This method minimizes the risk of wood splitting while allowing the fasteners to expand wood fibers and create a stronger mechanical bond.

Material selection is equally deliberate. CLG’s internal specifications require a minimum 2×4 framing and no less than 3/8-inch plywood paneling. These standards help prevent bowing, support safe stacking in storage and transit environments, and ensure the crate maintains rigidity from origin through delivery. Multi-layer plywood construction also improves fastener retention, allowing the framing and paneling to function as a unified structural system.

Every requirement is documented within engineered specifications that are routinely reviewed to remain aligned with — or ahead of— applicable industry expectations.

 

Standards Built into Every Crate

CLG’s packaging capabilities are built to meet the demands of both commercial and regulated environments. Our facility operates in compliance with the International Plant Protection Convention’s ISPM 15 guidelines, which regulate wood packaging materials used in international trade to prevent the spread of pests and protect global ecosystems.

In addition, CLG manufactures crates to Military Specification (Mil-Spec) requirements and supports military-grade packaging standards when required. This includes alignment with:

    • MIL-STD-2073-1E, which defines standard practices for military packaging, preservation methods, and container selection.
    • MIL-C-104C, which establishes requirements for wood-sheathed crate design, approved wood materials, and assembly methods.

These packaging and crating capabilities allow CLG to support projects  requiring strict regulatory compliance, specialized preservation, or defense-related packaging performance.

Precision manufacturing depends on the right tools. CLG’s Savannah operation recently expanded its in-house capabilities with the Hendrick HK5 3200PL computerized panel saw, strengthening both production accuracy and processing speed.

Equipped with a 25-horsepower motor, five-inch cutting depth, and the ability to process stacked materials, the system enables consistent, repeatable cuts across a wide range of lumber dimensions. A digital control interface, automatic blade positioning, and variable speed operation help improve finish quality while extending blade life.

    • Air flotation tables for controlled material handling
