The Challenge
The customer faced a significant challenge when importing heavy steel coils in standard enclosed shipping containers.
Because the coils could not be accessed from above, traditional crane-based unloading methods were not an option. Extracting the coils through the container doors also presented the risk of damaging the container floors or the coils themselves if the appropriate equipment and handling process were not used.
With a recurring volume of shipments planned, the customer needed more than a solution for individual containers. They needed a safe, efficient, and repeatable process capable of handling a high volume of coils without compromising the cargo or equipment.

Working with Greenfield Products, CLG sourced specialized coil-handling equipment designed to access and extract the heavy coils through the container doors. The equipment provides a controlled method for unloading the coils while reducing the risk of damage to the cargo and container floors.
CLG also established a team of trained operators to manage the specialized handling process. Combined with an efficient drayage network, the solution allows CLG to move incoming containers through the facility and efficiently flow the coils into short-term warehouse storage.
With this process in place, CLG can unload up to 40 coils per day, providing the throughput needed to support the customer's ongoing import volume.
