CLG Supply Chain Insights: Savannah's Port Expansion & Logistics Growth
As Georgia invests in port capacity and transportation infrastructure, businesses have an opportunity to strengthen the logistics networks that support their growth.
Savannah continues to strengthen its position as a major gateway for global commerce. On October 14, 2026, the Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) announced that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers had approved the permit for the planned Savannah Container Terminal, marking a significant milestone in the region’s long-term infrastructure development.
The $2.3 billion project will add 3.5 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of annual container capacity at a planned 350-acre facility on Hutchinson Island. Construction is scheduled to begin in January 2028, with completion anticipated in the mid-2030s. Once completed, the Port of Savannah’s total planned container capacity will increase from 7.75 million to 12 million TEUs.
The terminal is part of a broader investment strategy that includes nearly $5 billion in planned port infrastructure investments over the next decade. Together with ongoing terminal improvements and inland transportation investments, these initiatives reinforce Georgia’s growing role in domestic and international supply chains.
For businesses, the implications extend beyond the port itself. As cargo capacity expands, the ability to store, handle, and transport freight efficiently will remain essential to translating infrastructure investment into supply chain value.
Georgia's Growing Logistics Advantage
Georgia’s continued investment in its ports reflects the state’s broader economic momentum. Named the No. 1 state for business for the 13th consecutive year, Georgia offers a combination of port access, transportation connectivity, and a business environment that supports manufacturing, distribution, and international trade.
The Port of Savannah connects ocean freight with domestic markets through established highway and rail networks. As port capacity and supporting infrastructure grow, these connections will remain important to businesses moving industrial equipment, raw materials, consumer goods, and other cargo throughout the Southeast and beyond.
For companies evaluating distribution locations, expanding operations, or reassessing their supply chain strategies, Savannah’s continued development creates an opportunity to consider how regional logistics resources can support long-term growth.
What Port Expansion Means for Supply Chains
Additional port capacity creates opportunities for future growth, but realizing those benefits depends on how efficiently freight moves beyond the terminal. Three factors will remain important as Savannah’s logistics network evolves.
Inland Warehousing & Distribution
Flexible warehousing, cross-docking, and project storage help businesses manage inventory fluctuations and coordinate deliveries around customer demand and operational schedules.
Transportation Flexibility
Access to highway and rail networks, combined with transloading and trucking services, gives businesses more options for moving freight efficiently between ports, warehouses, and final destinations.
Logistics Coordination
Aligning port activity with warehouse capacity, transportation schedules, and delivery requirements helps reduce operational bottlenecks, particularly for specialized equipment and project cargo.
Ultimately, port expansion creates opportunity, while an integrated logistics network helps businesses translate that growth into supply chain advantages.
How CLG Supports a Growing Logistics Market
As a family-owned third-party logistics provider headquartered in Savannah, Coastal Logistics Group (CLG) has built its operations around the needs of businesses moving cargo through one of the Southeast’s most important trade gateways.
CLG SAVANNAH
CLG’s Savannah campus encompasses 599,200 square feet of warehousing across three facilities, strategically located within 2.6 to 4.7 miles of the Port of Savannah. With convenient access to I-95 and I-16, the campus connects port activity with regional and inland transportation networks.
Each facility offers distinct advantages. CLG’s headquarters at 50 Sonny Perdue Drive features a 320,000-square-foot warehouse, three acres of yard storage, and 20 railcar spots served by Norfolk Southern. The campus also includes a 179,200-square-foot facility at 135 Distribution Drive and a 100,000-square-foot warehouse at 980 Bourne Avenue. Together, these facilities provide flexible capacity to support a range of storage, handling, and distribution requirements.
CLG also maintains dedicated warehouse space for paper, lumber, and other forest products, supported by specialized handling equipment. Additional capabilities include rail, bulk, and container transloading; cross-docking; custom crating and export packaging; project cargo handling for oversized and heavy-lift freight; and value-added services.
By combining port proximity with specialized equipment, rail access, and comprehensive logistics services, CLG helps businesses coordinate cargo beyond the terminal. Through CLG Truckload Solutions, customers also have integrated transportation support. Together, these capabilities support the movement, storage, and protection of cargo, with solutions tailored to each customer’s operational requirements.
As Savannah continues to invest in its role as a global trade gateway, CLG is positioned to help businesses navigate evolving logistics demands through flexible warehousing, specialized expertise, and coordinated transportation solutions.
